After many years of extensive construction jobs, I once had an ex boyfriend who never worked a day of manual labor in his life tell me that I was slinging a sledgehammer wrong on a project in Tennessee - because my abs didn’t hurt. This piece is what I call a rage baby.
I started of series of works, making tools that I used on construction sites out of glass. Then I began to mix the glass material with their original rusted metal, as well as concrete.
I wanted to play with the preconceived ideas of the materials. Often glass is thought of as fragile, feminine, impractical, pure. Concrete is often seen as strong, masculine, gritty. There are often times, however, when glass is much stronger and can endure much more than concrete. It is also transparent. There are times when concrete is frail and crumbles, and no light can pass through.
Combining these materials played with the juxtaposition of gender roles I was often waging war with in labor intensive fields of work. In this piece, I filmed myself using a glass trowel, to apply concrete to the screen, erasing and hiding my feminine image from the viewers gaze.
