Inward: a Portal Between Present, Past, & Future

Interactive Installation
Projection, concrete, wooden frame.

I thought a lot about how our perception of self ebbs and flows through various chapters of our lives. I thought about how boring a plain blue sky would be if it never changed or obscured the light, if it never changed with the seasons or offered any extreme variations in shape, energy, and shadows. I wondered how we could learn to surrender to our own currents with the same affection.

Displayed alongside the work is a mailbox as well as a text that reads: "Healing is not a future event that is always out of reach, but a present state of continuous unfolding; an exercise in compassion and expansion."

This work explores how our sense of self shifts and evolves over time, even when it feels like nothing changes. The work invites viewers to consider how they might extend gratitude, acceptance, and appreciation to their own periods of transformation in the present moment. They are invited to sit down with some note paper and write themselves a letter of gratitude. They put the letter in an envelope with their own return mailing address.

Six months later, the letter is returned to them, creating a portal between the present moment and the person they are becoming. A way to remind them to show themselves gratitude in the present once again.
